Modem, 1989, U.S. Robotics. The Courier Dual Standard was the flagship modem of U.S. Robotics at the end of the 1980s. It supports both the company's proprietary HST protocol at 9600 and 14,400 bps, which was widely used by bulletin board systems, and the CCITT V.32 standard, so that it could talk at high speed to any modem of the time. It is an external unit in a metal case with a row of status LEDs and DIP switches, and later firmware upgrades brought V.32bis and, on newer units, V.34.
