Video game console, 1985, Nintendo. The Nintendo Entertainment System is the western version of the Famicom, launched in the United States in October 1985 and in Europe from 1986. Nintendo redesigned the console as a grey box with a front-loading cartridge slot that resembled a video recorder, to distance it from the video game crash of 1983, and it revived the console market with Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and a strict licensing system for third-party games. About 62 million were sold worldwide.
