Handheld game console, 1989, Atari. The Lynx was designed by Epyx and finished by Atari; it was the first handheld with a colour backlit LCD, several years ahead of its rivals, and could be turned upside down for left-handed players. Its 16-bit custom blitter "Suzy" scales and rotates sprites in hardware. The original model is a large unit with a 3.5" screen powered by six AA batteries, which limited its success against the Game Boy.
