Card sorter, 1949, IBM. The IBM 082 sorter arranges punched cards into pockets according to the hole punched in one column, at 650 cards per minute; sorting on several columns is done by repeated passes. It was the workhorse of punched-card data processing rooms in the 1950s and 1960s, used with keypunches, collators and tabulators before and alongside the first computers, and remained in service into the 1970s.
