Video game console, 1986, Atari. The 7800 ProSystem was designed by General Computer Corporation in 1984 as the successor to the 2600 and 5200, but its release was frozen when the company changed hands, and it reached the shops only in 1986. It was the first console with full backward compatibility, playing all 2600 cartridges, and its MARIA graphics chip could handle a large number of sprites, which made it suitable for arcade conversions. In Europe it was sold with a gamepad instead of the two-button joystick.
