Video game console, 1979, Mattel Electronics. The Intellivision was the first serious competitor of the Atari 2600, launched by Mattel with a 16-bit General Instrument processor, more detailed graphics and a library of sports and strategy games. The controllers are hand units with a disc, side buttons and a 12-key keypad on which game-specific overlays are placed. Over three million were sold before the video game crash of 1983; the Intellivoice module and the ECS computer add-on extended it.
