Midrange computer, 1988, IBM. The AS/400 (Application System/400) was announced in June 1988 as the successor of the System/36 and System/38, with the OS/400 operating system and an integrated relational database. The 9406 is the machine type of the large rack-mounted system units of the first generations (the B, C, D, E and F models of 1988 to 1994), which supported hundreds of terminals and were the standard business computers of medium-sized companies. Later 9406 models moved to PowerPC processors, and the line became the iSeries and System i.
