Video game console, 1990, Nintendo. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, sold in Japan as the Super Famicom from November 1990 and in Europe from 1992, was Nintendo's 16-bit console and the rival of the Sega Mega Drive. It has a 65C816-based processor, graphics chips able to scale and rotate backgrounds (the "Mode 7" used by F-Zero and Super Mario Kart) and a Sony sound chip, and cartridges could carry extra processors such as the Super FX of Star Fox. Almost 50 million were sold.
