Handheld game console, 1989, Nintendo. The Game Boy was designed by Gunpei Yokoi's team as a cheap, robust handheld with a monochrome reflective LCD and a battery life of tens of hours, and it defeated the technically superior colour handhelds of Atari and Sega. Released in Japan in April 1989, in America in July and in Europe in 1990, it was bundled with Tetris and sold about 119 million units including the later Game Boy Color; the original grey unit remained in production until the Game Boy Pocket of 1996.
