Video game console, 1996, Nintendo. The Nintendo 64 was Nintendo's 64-bit console, developed with Silicon Graphics and released in Japan and America in 1996 and in Europe in March 1997. It kept cartridges when its rivals had moved to CD-ROM, but its analogue-stick controller and games like Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and GoldenEye 007 defined 3D gaming for a generation. The Expansion Pak doubled its memory for later games.
