Workstation, 1999, Silicon Graphics. The Visual Workstation 540 was SGI's attempt to bring its graphics expertise to the Windows NT market: a tower with up to four Pentium III Xeon processors and the Cobalt graphics chipset with a unified memory architecture, using SGI's ARCS firmware instead of a PC BIOS, which made it incompatible with standard PC operating systems apart from Windows NT and Windows 2000 with SGI drivers. Together with the smaller 320 it was sold to CAD and digital content users from 1999 to 2001.
